Infinite Light” must be one of the most engaging art books ever published. Packed with exquisite reproductions and a joy to handle, this impressive full colour hardback contains a wealth of information on one of Uzbekistan’s greatest 20th century artists: Chingiz Akhmarov.

Although perhaps best known for his murals and decorative panels, Akhmarov (1912-1995) was also a talented portraitist and passionate tutor who went on to establish his own school of fine art, leaving an intellectual legacy that influenced the artistic vision of a whole generation and indeed, the development of Uzbekistan’s national culture per se.

Using rare archive photographs and personal accounts by the artist’s students and contemporaries, leading art historian Prof. Akbar Khakimov traces the course of Chingiz Akhmarov’s unusual personal and professional life to shed light on some of the factors that contributed to his distinctive style and penetrating philosophy of art.

The reproductions published here are outstanding, a rich selection of winsome portraits, striking murals and detailed sketches that open the door to a world inspired by the lyrical works of Alisher Navoi. As we turn the pages of this seminal book we can begin to appreciate just how impressive a contribution Akhmarov made to 20th century art.

Infinite Light” will appeal to art-lovers the world over as well as to art historians and specialists interested in twentieth century culture. The Karimov Foundation is currently preparing an English translation.
